BHM 17: Michonne

Michonne appears in both The Walking Dead comic book and television show. She was created by Robert Kirkman in 2005. Danai Gurira plays her on the show.

BHM 16: Bishop

Bishop is one of the X-Men and was created by John Bryne, Jim Lee, and Whilce Portacio in 1991 for Marvel Comics. His first live action appearance will be in the 2014 film, X-Men: Days of Future Past played by Omar Sy.

BHM 15: Steel

Steel, aka John Henry Irons was created in 1993 for DC Comics by Louise Simonson and Joe Bogdanove and was one of the heroes of Metropolis after the death of Superman.

BHM 14: Black Panther

T'Challa, the Black Panther, was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby back in 1962 for Marvel Comics. He's credited as being the first black superhero in major comics.

BHM 13: Batwing

Batwing, aka David Zavimbe, worked as one of Batman's allies. He appears in books published by DC Comics and was created by Grant Morrison in 2011.

BHM 12: Heimdall

Heimdall is a character for the 'Thor' comic books published by Marvel Comics. He was created by Stan Lee, Larry Lieber, and Jack Kirby and first appeared in 1962. As with Harvey Dent, Heimdall was originally created as a white character. For the 2011 'Thor' film, director Kenneth Branagh decided to rely on the actor's talent instead of skin color and picked Idris Elba to play the role which was definitely the right choice.

BHM 11: The Oracle

The Oracle appears in The Matrix trilogy of films beginning in 1999 and was originally portrayed by Gloria Foster (pictured above) and later portrayed by Mary Alice. She was created by The Wachowski's.

BHM 10: John Stewart

John Stewart is a member of the Green Lantern Corps and appears in different 'Green Lantern' and various other comic books for DC Comics. He first appeared in 1971 and was created by Dennis O'Neil and Neal Adams

BHM 9: Benjamin Sisko

Benjamin Sisko appeared on 'Star Trek: Deep Space Nine' and was the first African-American captain to lead a Star Trek series, and was played by actor Avery Brooks. He was created by Rick Berman and Michael Piller in 1993.

BHM 8: Susannah Dean

Gunslinger Susanna Dean was created by Stephen King in 1987 for his series of science fiction/western/fantasy novels, 'The Dark Tower'.

BHM 7: Harvey Dent

Harvey Dent, aka Two-Face, was created in 1942 by Bob Kane and Bill Finger. Throughout all of his portrayals, the character was depicted as white. In 1989, when director Tim Burton was casting for his film, 'Batman', he decided to go a different route and picked Billy Dee Williams, marking the first, and so far only, depiction of Dent as an African-American. The original plan was for Williams to play Dent's alter-ego Two-Face in a future film, unfortunately that never came to be.

BHM 6: Zoe Washburne

Zoe Washburne was created by Joss Whedon in 2002 for his television show 'Firefly', as well for the movie 'Serenity'. She was played by Gina Torres in both.

BHM 5: Mace Windu

Jedi Master Mace Windu was portrayed by Samuel L. Jackson in three Star Wars films. He was created by George Lucas in 1999. Windu's also appeared in several animated television shows and films as well comics, novels, and video games.

BHM 4: Winston Zeddemore

Ghostbuster Winston Zeddemore, was created by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis in 1984 for the films 'Ghostbusters' and 'Ghostbusters II'. He was played by Ernie Hudson in both films. Winston has also appeared in an animated series as well as several comic books and video games over the past thirty years.

Black History Month: Iconic Characters from Comic Book Culture

It's February and this month is Black History Month in the US. I thought an interesting art project would be to recognize African-American fictional characters from the comic book, science fiction, and fantasy genres. I wanted to do some kind of project that was pretty different from previous work that I've done. I plan on having a character portrait for each day of the month.

Storm is one of the X-Men and was created by Len Wein and Dave Cockrum in 1975 for Marvel Comics. She's also been portrayed by Halle Berry in four live action films.

Miles Morales aka Spider-Man, was created by Brian Michael Bendis and Sara Pichelli in 2011 for Marvel Comics for their 'Ultimate' line of books.

Geordi LaForge, who was portrayed by LeVar Burton, was created in 1987 by Gene Roddenberry for the television show Star Trek: The Next Generation. He also appeared in four films and hundreds of comic books and novels.
